Chapter Ten

Valerie was startled at the pleasant feeling of the kiss. Although she wasn’t sure which one of them had initiated it, it was nice. No, it was more than nice. He was the second man she had kissed and she liked it, liked the melty feeling in her stomach and lower. Her head swam and she sighed. Kissing was decidedly an enjoyable diversion.

At once she was being held at arm’s length from Mr. Wade. “We shouldn’t be doing this. You’re intoxicated.” He lowered them both to the couch, but still faced her as if unable to look away.

Needing support for her suddenly heavy limbs, she leaned onto Mr. Wade’s chest and found it quite solid. She inhaled. He smelled wonderfully warm and masculine. “I couldn’t be intoxicated—I’ve only had a tiny amount.” She glanced up at him for verification.

When their eyes met, Valerie felt a little jolt.

“Absinthe, my dear, is lethal stuff.”

“You seem to know an awful lot about it,” she murmured, sounding irritated even unto her own ears, but for what reason, she couldn’t determine.

“Trust me. The sweet, innocent-looking liquid could be the cause of a proper lady’s demise into . . . impropriety.”

Valerie pushed away from his chest and held herself there with straight, slightly numb arms. “Are you insinuating that our kiss was improper?”

“Kissing can lead to improper behavior.” His gaze wandered to her lips. “Especially when one indulges.”

“Nonsense. I happen to like kissing. I think it to be a wonderful recreation. In fact, I’d like to kiss a dozen men.” A stray lock of his light brown hair had fallen over his forehead. Instinctively, Valerie reached up and swept it aside. His hair felt soft and clean. She imagined it smelled nice, too. As if on their own, her fingers dove into the top of his hair and scratched at his scalp, luxuriating in the silkiness.
